Smiths Detection Advanced Explosives Detectors Provide Security for Brazilian Federal Airport Authority

Thirty Two Systems Deployed in Seventeen Airports Across Brazil

Sao Paulo, Brazil , 30 December 2007 - Smiths Detection, the world's leading provider of X-ray and trace detection equipment, announced it will be supporting INFRAERO, the Brazilian Federal Airport Authority with its new Ionscan 500DT, a sophisticated desktop explosives detector capable of detecting microscopic amounts of over 40 different types of explosives.

The new detection systems will be deployed by INFRAERO in 17 airports across the country and will work in conjunction with Smiths Detection’s 6040i’s carry-on baggage X-ray systems at airport security checkpoints.

The IONSCAN 500DT uses proprietary software specially developed for effective and efficient detection. It has an advanced sampling wand to remove the need for operators to handle swabs after every operation and sports a color touch screen display, built-in printer and a substantial, robust independent, internal hard drive.

With more than 6,000 trace detection systems deployed throughout the world, Smiths Detection has designed the IONSCAN 500DT for application at airports, ports and border crossings, public and private buildings, courthouses and correctional facilities.
